These attenuators are originally equipped with a self-powered fan: it only turns if you strum the strings and if the volume set on the amp is high enough. Connecting a transformer to these devices causes the fan to run continuously, improving cooling. This is particularly useful during long studio sessions or live performances.

Adjustable voltage allows the fan to run at different speeds, which is useful for optimizing cooling while limiting noise.
